African philosophy, culture, and traditional medicine.M. Akin Makinde - 1988 - Athens, Ohio: Ohio University Center for International Studies.
For over two centuries, Western scholars have discussed African philosophy and culture, often in disparaging, condescending terms, and always from an alien European perspective. Many Africans now share this perspective, having been trained in the western, empirical tradition. Makinde argues that, particularly in view of the costs and failings of western style culture, Africans must now mold their own modern culture by blending useful western practices with valuable indigenous African elements. Specifically, Makinde demonstrates the potential for the development (...)

    In Pursuit of Truth. [REVIEW]M. Akin Makinde - 1985 - Idealistic Studies 15 (3):272-274.
In keeping with the tradition of honoring living great philosophers, Paul Levinson has added yet another anthology of new essays on the work of one of the greatest philosophers of this century, Sir Karl Raimund Popper. What is peculiar to the book under review is the editor’s deliberate selection of authors who are either the old students of Popper or his long associates. This makes the pattern of discussion in each essay highly predictable—a monotony of defense of Popper against his (...)

    The Integration of Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses".John Limon - 1986 - Critical Inquiry 12 (2):422-438.
The smallest ambition of this essay is to demonstrate that Rider, the central character in William Faulkner’s short story “Pantaloon in Black,” cannot be understood. This may be of some interest to Faulkner specialists. But the fact that he cannot be understood has ramifications, because “Pantaloon in Black,” seems to be the anomaly of the book Go Down, Moses, which is either a collection of stories or a novel, depending on the success one has in integrating “Pantaloon in Black” (...)

Structure and agency in the holocaust: Daniel J. goldhagen and his critics.A. D. Moses - 1998 - History and Theory 37 (2):194–219.
A striking aspect of the so-called "Goldhagen debate" has been the bifurcated reception Hitler's Willing Executioners has received: the enthusiastic welcome of journalists and the public was as warm as the impatient dismissal of most historians was cool. This article seeks to transcend the current impasse by analyzing the underlying issues of Holocaust research at stake here. It argues that a "deep structure" necessarily characterizes the historiography of the Holocaust, comprising a tension between its positioning in "universalism" and "particularism" narratives. (...)

The Problems of Genocide: Permanent Security and the Language of Transgression.A. Dirk Moses - 2021 - Cambridge University Press.
"Genocide is a problem: not only the terrible fact of mass death, but also how the relatively new idea and law of genocide organises and distorts our thinking about civilian destruction. Taking the normative perspective of civilian immunity from military attack, this book argues that the implicit hierarchy of international law, atop which sits genocide as the "crime of crimes," blinds us to other types of humanly caused civilian death, like bombing cities, the "collateral damage" of missile and drone strikes, (...)

Social welfare, the neo-conservative turn and educational opportunity.Michele S. Moses - 2004 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 38 (2):275–286.
This essay examines the educational opportunities of people in poverty who receive social welfare assistance. The dominant political theory underlying social policy (including education policy) in the United States has evolved from 1960s and 1970s welfare liberalism into 1980s and 1990s style neo-conservatism—a theory that embraces principles of the market and individual liberty as paramount social values. Against this backdrop, I review two recent books that provide compelling evidence for this turn and I call for increased understanding of the relationship (...)

  33. Of sensory systems and the "aboutness" of mental states.Kathleen Akins - 1996 - Journal of Philosophy 93 (7):337--372.

    Mathematical Analysis of the Effects of HIV-Malaria Co-infection on Workplace Productivity.Ibrahim Y. Seini, Oluwole D. Makinde & Baba Seidu - 2015 - Acta Biotheoretica 63 (2):151-182.
In this paper, a nonlinear dynamical system is proposed and qualitatively analyzed to study the dynamics and effects of HIV-malaria co-infection in the workplace. Basic reproduction numbers of sub-models are derived and are shown to have LAS disease-free equilibria when their respective basic reproduction numbers are less than unity. Conditions for existence of endemic equilibria of sub-models are also derived. Unlike the HIV-only model, the malaria-only model is shown to exhibit a backward bifurcation under certain conditions. Conditions for optimal control (...)

Evaluation of chloroquine as a potent anti‐malarial drug: issues of public health policy and healthcare delivery in post‐war Liberia.Moses B. F. Massaquoi & Stephen B. Kennedy - 2003 - Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 9 (1):83-87.
Chloroquine-resistant plasmodium falciparum malaria is a serious public health threat that is spreading rapidly across Sub-Saharan Africa. It affects over three quarters (80%) of malarial endemic countries. Of the estimated 300-500 million cases of malaria reported annually, the vast majority of malarial-related morbidities occur among young children in Africa, especially those concentrated in the remote rural areas with inadequate access to appropriate health care services. In Liberia, in vivo studies conducted between 1993 and 2000 observed varying degrees of plasmodium falciparum (...)
